Why the CIBM Center for Biomedical Imaging
is the only place for TESSERACT

CIBM was conceived to consolidate and elevate biomedical research in Western Switzerland established as a joint effort among UNIL, EPFL, UNIGE, CHUV, and HUG, facilitated by the unique legal structure of a “Société Simple.”  The CIBM TESSERACT Initiative thrives on the synergy between academic institutions, public schools, and external stakeholders. It is built as an open ecosystem, ensuring that research is not confined to laboratories but remains deeply connected to the realities of daily life to dynamically evolve and improve over time. Each institution involved plays a strategic and indispensable role, forming a network of capabilities that no single entity could replicate. No other center in the world possesses the technical infrastructure, legal framework, regional backing, and interdisciplinary maturity required to host a project of this scope. It is not only a question of having the right tools, but of having the right community—carefully built over two decades—to support the full potential of a generational scientific undertaking. Through this deep integration of research, practice, and policy, the CIBM TESSERACT Initiative accelerates the translation of discovery into action, redefining how science can serve society.

A unique network of capabilities

Biomedical Imaging and Neuroscience

Developing innovative biomedical imaging tools and methods to explore the neurophysiological basis of curiosity, creativity, and cooperation.

Cognitive and Social Sciences

Linking brain function with behavior, learning processes, and developmental psychology.

Engineering and Data Science

Developing AI-driven models to extract meaningful patterns from complex biomedical imaging, physiological, and behavioral data.

Clinical, Education and Policy Integration

Translating scientific findings into applicable frameworks for child development in context of education, and policy, but also for the invaluable clinical translation for mental health prevention and early clinical markers

AMBASSADORS

The CIBM TESSERACT Initiative Ambassadors will be key for the development of the project. They will:

  • provide support and answer to clarification requests from the CIBM council,
  • connect with trusted networks and key communities,
  • help promote visibility, global relevance and
